Al Haruj
Volcanic COMPLEX
LIBYA
2026
The Al Haruj volcanic complex is one of the largest basaltic lava fields in the Sahara and among the most extensive in Africa. Spanning thousands of square kilometers in central Libya, it is formed by vast flows of dark basalt created by ancient eruptions that shaped a rugged landscape of lava plains, cones, and volcanic ridges.
From the air, the terrain appears almost otherworldly – an immense black expanse cutting through the desert. Remote and rarely visited, Al Haruj remains one of the Sahara’s most striking geological features and a powerful reminder of the region’s volcanic past.
