There are places where time passes slower than others, where distance does not determine space, where sand marks time. The desert teaches you to adapt to the course of the sand, dune after dune, grain, after grain. The sand is the host and we are the guests. Many civilizations have been buried by the sands of time; or maybe by the time of sand. The wind transports the sand slowly, day after day, depositing it where it encounters obstacles or where a dune has already been formed, expanding it and sometimes creating new ones. I like to imagine this process as a dance of nature. Sand, Wind and Time unite to create a superior art form. These places and their memory remain preserved here in these images immortalizing the time and the sands.

Melting Dunes II was shot in a remote area of the Sahara in Mauritania during my last, unfortunately aborted, expedition.
It contrasts the grandeur of the desert and dunes against the smallness of human beings. A top-down aerial perspective taken at about 100 meters of relative altitude, the shot transports us into a scene of surreal proportions. The parked car is overlooked by a cascade of dunes as if melting on it.

The Terjit Oasis is nestled in a gorge on the western edge of the Adrar plateau, covered by a rich palm grove stretching a few hundred meters alongside a stream which emerges from a spring. The oasis was known to the locals as paradise in hell. For hundreds of years it had been a place of rest and shelter for caravans and insanely brave lone wayfarers who decided to travel through the vast Sahara Desert.

A triangular building lays right in the middle of the Sahara, at the eastern border between Mauritania and Mali. This region is one of the most remote and hostile environments on earth. Now abandoned, this was once the main prison of Walatah, an important caravan city in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries which played a crucial role as the southern terminus of the trans-Saharan trade route.

Occasionally, the Sahara Desert, as many other deserts of the planet, experiences extremely rare and intense flash rains, transforming arid landscapes into temporary desert lakes. These ephemeral lakes appear swiftly and disappear rapidly, offering a brief yet dramatic contrast to the typically dry conditions of the world’s largest hot desert.
