UBARI LAKES

LIBYA
2024-2026
Set within the dunes of the Ubari Sand Sea in the Fezzan region of Libya, the Ubari Lakes form one of the Sahara’s most unexpected landscapes. These saline lakes – among them Um al Maa, Gaberoun, Mandara, Atrona, Um al Hasin, and Um al Hisan – lie between towering sand dunes, creating vivid contrasts of water, salt, and desert.
Many are fed by ancient groundwater and display striking variations in color and mineral content. Despite the hyper-arid environment, these lakes support small pockets of vegetation and wildlife, offering rare aquatic environments within the vast expanse of the Sahara.
