WAW AN NAMUS
Volcanic COMPLEX
LIBYA
2026
Located in the Fezzan region of central-southern Libya, Waw an Namus is one of the Sahara’s most extraordinary volcanic landscapes. The vast caldera spans about 4 kilometers in diameter, encircled by a striking ring of black basaltic lava that contrasts sharply with the surrounding desert sands.
At its center lie several small lakes whose colors range from green to reddish tones due to algae and mineral content.
The name Waw an Namus, locally translated as “Valley of Mosquitoes”, reflects the presence of water and vegetation within this otherwise arid volcanic basin, where a dark central cone rises dramatically from the caldera floor.
